Ingredient Substitutes

Now, I think we can all agree that it's frustrating when we're out of that one ingredient that we need to make our favorite dessert.  Check out this list of substitutes so next time that happens, you don't have to run out to the store. 

Baking powder:
      For one teaspoon, substitute 1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 5/8 teaspoon cream of tartar. 

Baking soda:
Before you start baking make sure you have this, because there is NO substitute for baking soda. 

       For 1 cup, you can substitute 1 cup of margarine or 1 cup of vegetable shortening (Crisco). 

For 1 cup, substitute 1 tablespoon lemon juice/vinegar and add enough milk to make one cup. 

Unsweetened Chocolate: 
For 1 ounce, substitute 3 tablespoons cocoa plus 1 tablespoon butter. 

For 1 tablespoon, substitute 2 tablespoons flour. 

Cake Flour: 
For 1 cup, substitute 1 cup minus 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour. 

Powdered Sugar:
For 1 cup, substitute 1 cup granulated sugar plus 1 tablespoon cornstarch. 

For 1 cup, substitute 1 cup of honey, maple syrup, or dark corn syrup.
